Give Yourself a Haircut

If eyes are a window into the soul, then hairstyle is a key to the front door. How we wear our tresses-—long or short, curly or straight, color-enhanced or natural—-says a lot about who we are and how we define ourselves. And the truth is, all that self-reflection gets expensive. For those looking to reduce maintenance costs, the below tips will show you how to cut your own hair.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pair of sharp scissors
  • Towel
  • Shampoo
  • Two mirrors, one handheld and one stationary
  • Newspaper
  1. Step 1

    Shampoo and towel dry hair.

  2. Step 2

Lay out a newspaper underneath your work station to catch falling hair.

  3. Step 3

Part hair into six even sections. Use bobby pins to keep the sections separate.

  4. Step 4

Choose the section closest to the front of your face and hold straight.

  5. Step 5

    Cut to desired length.

  6. Step 6

Repeat process with the other five sections.

  7. Step 7

Using a handheld mirror, review your work in a stationary mirror. Snip any uneven hairs as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cutting your own hair is a big decision. If you have any qualms, start with a trim and work your way to a more advanced ‘do.
  • If you are emulating a particular cut, keep a photo nearby for easy reference.
  • If you make a mistake, don’t try to fix it. You will end up cutting off more than you intended. Seeking help from a professional can help ease the error.
