If you would like to use Microsoft Outlook Express or Outlook email software program with your cable Internet email on your computer, these steps will get you started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outlook or Outlook Express email software program
  • Cable email address for each user in your family
  1. Step 1

Double-click to open up Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express email program on your computer.

  2. Step 2

Click "Tools" on the top menu in Outlook in your browser.

  3. Step 3

Go to Accounts, and select the "Mail" tab.

  4. Step 4

Click "Add," and the side arrow expands so that you can click "Mail." Click the next button.

  5. Step 5

Type in your name. Click the next button.

  6. Step 6

Type in your full email address in the box, including the information after the @ sign. Click the next button.

  7. Step 7

While still in Outlook, type in blank below the "Incoming mail server"
pop-server.wi.rr.com (this is for roadrunner cable Internet). If you have another cable provider, access its website, and then click the "Help" tab. Find "Settings for Outlook/Outlook express) and type in the incoming mail server. It usually ends the same as your email address. Tab down to the field below. The tab is in left corner.

  8. Step 8

Type: smtp-server.wi.rr.com for roadrunner or whatever your cable company's settings are for Outlook. Click "Next."

  9. Step 9

While still in Outlook, type in the account name and tab down to the password. You usually do not need the entire email and password. Check the box next to "Save Password" and do not check any other boxes on the page. Click "Next," and then click "Finish."

  10. Step 10

Click "Send and Receive" at the top of the Outlook menu to make sure all the settings are correct and there are no typos. If it does not send or receive and you get an error message, repeat the above steps and check for any errors in your settings. Everything must be exact for this to send/receive email. This will only work on the desktop or laptop computer you set it up on.

*These steps will also work with certain DSL Internet providers.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you cannot get it to work after a few tries, consider calling the support number of your cable provider, and they will walk you through it.
  • You can repeat the above process for each email address you would like to add. Outlook email software will not work for MSN hotmail, Windows Live Mail, Yahoo! or AOL.
  • This will work with Outlook or Outlook Express email, though the screens may be a little different.
  • If you do not have high speed Internet, you may sign up using the links below
  • Click links below to access further information
  • Outlook express software resides on your hard drive, so if your computer crashes and you cannot reboot, all your emails, folders and addresses will be lost unless you back them up. Save your addresses and emails periodically in case of computer failure.
  • Microsoft is phasing out Outlook Express in favor of the web-based Windows Live Mail. Web-based mail is safer because you access it from the Internet and it is stored there instead of your computer hard drive.
