Things You'll Need:
- Kit from your new DSL Internet Service Provider
- Kit generally includes: modem, Ethernet cable, filters for phones including 1 wall mounted phone jack filter, CD-rom and DSL wiring to phone jack.
- PC - either desktop or laptop with networking jack (card), with working CD or DVD-rom drive.
- No tools are required
-
Step 1
When you receive your kit from the phone company or other DSL provider, unpack the box to make sure everything you need is in there. They will often include a packing list, count the total number of pieces if there isi a total. Or, just look it over to make sure nothing is missing. If there are parts missing, call the company immediately.
-
Step 2
Install all filters on the phones. These generally just snap into the phone jack (where applicable). This is not necessary on phone "extensions:" the ones without jack plug-ins.
-
Step 3
If you have a wall mounted jack, remove the phone and disconnect, place the filter over the jack and slide it down securely until it locks into place and reconnect the phone and cord.
-
Step 4
Take the modem out of the package and the 2 cords/cables. Plug the yellow Ethernet (phone jack type) cable into the back of the computer in the networking jack and into the modem. Then attach the grey cable into the DSL slot of the filter and into the back of the modem. You do not need to place the modem by the computer, you can place it by the phone jack if that is closer. Attach the power cord and plug in but do not turn it on.
-
Step 5
Turn on the computer, insert the CD. Follow the on-screen prompts. This may take up to one hour to follow all the steps, install software and register. Be sure to write down your user name and password. You will need this in the future.
-
Step 6
Turn on the modem by pushing the button when needed. It will detect an Internet Connection at that time. You should have green lights on there and no red. If you have a red light and repeat the above steps, call your provider for free setup assistance on the telephone.
-
Step 7
When you double-click on your Internet browser, it should display your home page.
