Unexpected occurrences can happen during vacations and the last thing you want is to be stuck paying for that Hawaiian adventure or ski romp to Aspen while battling the flu. Travel insurance can help you enjoy your trip without worrying about accidents, illnesses, or cancellations. Understand what you’re getting from a travel insurance policy. That will help you choose the best one.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Consider medical reimbursement. This coverage is particularly beneficial if going on an adventure trip because that is when accidents are most likely to occur. Or you may be visiting an underdeveloped country and pick up a stomach virus. This benefit will give you medical coverage for accidental illness or injury while traveling.
Step2
Buy trip cancellation or interruption coverage. If you need to cancel your trip for any reason, this coverage will reimburse you for any expenses related to your trip. You may also be entitled to reimbursement if your trip is interrupted.
Step3
Get luggage reimbursement. In the unfortunate incidence that you make it to Tahiti but your luggage doesn’t, this coverage will reimburse you for the purchase of clothing and other personal items. Make sure you know the parameters and final dollar value offered.
Step4
Consider baggage damage. In the unfortunate event your favorite personalized travel bag has been damaged in transport, this coverage will reimburse you for whatever the airline will not.
Step5
Buy emergency assistance coverage. This coverage will arrange for emergency money transfers if your credit cards or travelers checks have been stolen. You will also be covered for unauthorized use of your credit cards if unfamiliar purchases appear.
Step6
Research airline strike coverage. When it’s time to head back home, you may find that your airline has just declared a strike. This will cover you for non-refundable expenses related to transportation strikes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your insurance agent about coverage specifics, deductibles, how to file a claim and about any policy exclusions.
