Learn how to repair and restore various types of old stone walls.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Varies depending on the type of stone wall.
  1. Step 1

Assess the damage and list items needed to complete the job. Is the stone wall an interior wall of a home? If so be sure to check the foundation below the wall. If needed support the wall from the basement using wood. For an interior stone wall you will also need plaster, a sander and paint. If the stone wall is freestanding outside determine how many replacement stones will be needed to repair the wall. You will also need mortar for the external wall repair.

  2. Step 2

Set up your materials. If the interior wall is only superficially damaged, prepare the surface by making cracks in the wall deeper so they will hold the plaster better. Plaster the wall, let dry, sand it down and prime and paint it. For an exterior stone wall you will need to spend some time finding stones that look authentically old and fit in the space. Once you have found your pieces you can begin removing stones that are damaged or are unsteady. Replace the stones using the mortar your have prepared ahead of time. Remember to match the colors as best as possible so it looks authentic when complete.

  3. Step 3

Re-assess the stone wall after it has cured. Interior stone walls naturally have an uneven look to them; this is quite common in old homes and is perfectly fine. Exterior walls need to be sturdy so that they hold up to time and weather. If the wall is unsteady you may have used too little mortar to secure your stones. Try again by taking the stone wall apart and rebuilding it with more mortar.
