Competition amongst travel outfitters is becoming stiffer, which translates into deep discounts for travelers. All the airlines and car rental companies want your business and often solicit it by offering incentives.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask about discounts at the time you make the reservation, not after you've arrived at your destination. Getting a discounted room at the hotel is not as easy as booking one up front.

  2. Step 2

Ask about discounts everywhere you go. Not all discounts are advertised, so ask while you're in the restaurant, taking the train or bus or visiting a theatre or museum. Even bed and breakfasts will offer a discount for multiple nights or off-seasons stays. Some group associations such as AAA or USAA offer travel discounts. Bring identification cards for any group of which you are a member.

  3. Step 3

Most airlines have associations with car rental companies and hotels to offer points or rewards that can translate into mileage posted to your frequent flier account. Always check before booking which places will give you the best deal. Miles can quickly add up and save you money on your next flight.

  4. Step 4

Many airlines offer credit cards that accumulate mileage points with each purchase. While there's usually an annual fee for the card after the first year, it's worth it if you use the card often, especially for high ticket items.

  5. Step 5

Seniors are at a particular advantage when it comes to travel discounts. Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount to those 62 and older. Nearly every airline offers discounts for seniors with ages beginning anywhere from 55 to 62. AARP members are also entitled to travel discounts. You only need to be 50 or older and you don't have to be retired. Greyhound also offers senior discounts for an annual $5 membership fee.

  6. Step 6

Students also have a discount travel advantage as long as they have school identification. Many travel companies, airlines, buses, and tour groups offer discounts.

  7. Step 7

One of the best ways to secure discount travel is go places off season, such as the Caribbean in the summer or London in winter. You'll avoid crowds and save money on flights and accommodations.

  8. Step 8

Flexibility in your travel plans can also result in a discount. Including an overnight on Saturday, traveling at odd hours and including one or more stops can lower your ticket price.

on 10/6/2008 Nice tips. It always pays to ask for discounts, even if not mentioned.
