How to Keep Your Dog From Getting Carsick

How to Keep Your Dog From Getting Carsick thumbnail
Be patient when training your dog to ride in the car.

Dogs that get carsick can be a real problem. The condition limits the kinds of outing you can take with your pet; even a trip to the vet can result in a mess. If you have the time and patience, however, certain steps will help your dog acclimate to riding in the car.

Things You'll Need

  • a car
  • a dog that is fearful of cars
  • patience and plenty of time
  • dog treats and/or dog food
  • veterinary prescribed medication if necessary

Instructions

    • 1

For several days, feed your dog in the car. At feeding time, take him to the car on a leash, carrying his pan of dog food with you. Put the dog into the car and give him his food. Leave the door open.

    • 2

When your dog appears comfortable eating in the car, take him to the car at non-feeding times and just let him sit, with the door open. Start the car, let it run for a short while, then turn it off.

    • 3

Give the dog plenty of praise and pats when he is in the car. Give him treats in the car, if you like.

    • 4

Begin to shut the door while he is in the car. Get into the front seat, and drive the car up and down the driveway. If he appears to be comfortable, take the dog for a short drive around the block.

    • 5

Gradually increase the length of your drives, sticking to smooth roads with few hills and turns. When you get him out of the car, praise and hug him.

    • 6

Take him for a few drives to special places, such as a pet store or dog park. Condition him to connect the drive with a fun destination.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your vet has prescribed anti-anxiety medications for your dog, you can give him those medications if necessary during this process. The goal is to help him to enjoy getting in the car and going places, without fear or anxiety.

  • Give him a rawhide chew or a kong toy stuffed with peanut butter to distract him on a long trip.

  • Never administer human medications without your vet's advice. Motion sickness remedies are not suitable for dogs.

Good advice. My puppy was terrible in the car and was sick on even the shortest trip. He now loves going in the car as we take him to the park to play. Thanks.
