Give Trendy Men's Haircuts

In order to look properly groomed men need to get their hair cut quite often, sometimes as often as once a week. Because this can get quite expensive it would be very helpful to have a basic understanding of the steps required to give a men's haircut.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A friend.
  • A comb.
  • A set of hair cutting scissors.
  • A set of Clippers.
  • A set of Clipper combs or guards.
  1. Step 1

Although it is possible to give yourself a trendy men’s haircut at home, this is very difficult to do. The most common men's haircut today is referred to as the Caesar. In order to achieve the look of the Caesar hair cut at home it would be best that one does not cut their own hair, but instead enlist a friend for the job.

  2. Step 2

You will first need to determine how short you would like the back of the hair. Once this decision has been made you will select the appropriate clipper comb or guard and attach it to the clipper. All clipper guards are labeled with the measurement of the hair that will be left on the head. In general most men chose to have 3/8 of an inch or a number 3 guard used to cut the hair on the back of the head. After determining what size guard you will use, and then attaching it to the clipper, you will begin cutting the hair. First cu the hair with the guard attached by combing the guard through the hair resting the comb on the scalp. With this first guard cut only up to the occipital bone on the back of the head(you will be able to feel this bone sticking out).

  3. Step 3

After you have cut the hair up to the occipital bone you will then need to change the guard on the clippers to the next largest guard, which in this case would be the #4 guard or the ½” guard. You will then cut the hair immediately above the hair that has been previously cut by holding the guard in a vertical position. Start cutting with the guard resting on the scalp, move the clippers so that the flat part of the guard moves straight up in the air. Do not follow the shape of the scull at this point!! In the event that you began cutting with a guard smaller than the number # 3 you will need to continue switching to a larger guard until you come to the number 4.

  4. Step 4

Once you have cut the hair with the number 4 guard you will then need to switch to using the scissors and comb. You will then hold the hair straight out on the sides of the head, allowing some hair that has already been cut to be in the section you are holding. Next you will cut the hair on the sides so that it is even with the previously cut hair, do this around the entire head.

  5. Step 5

You will then hold the hair on the center top of the head directly up in the air and cut to the desired length, again do not cut to the shape of the scalp, cut in a straight horizontal line. Do this going back from the forehead to the back of the head and then from side to side, this will help make sure that there are no uneven places in the hair. It is important that you do not attempt to blend with the sides of the head during this step.

  6. Step 6

Now you will hold sections of the hair in a diagonal position on the side of the head between the side and the top of the head, making sure that you have a previously cut section of hair both from the side and top of the head. You will then notice a point between these to previously cut pieces of hair, you will now cut this long piece of hair making an even line between the side and the top of the head. Continue to do this around the entire head.

  7. Step 7

In order to complete the hair cut trim around the ears and across the back of the neck. Comb the bang section down in the front making sure it is even, be particularly careful during this step if you decide you will take length off the bangs. You can always go back and cut more, but you can not put back hair you have already cut off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you have completed the steps use a pair of thinning shears to cut any pieces that appear to be longer than others. Because thinning shears do not cut every hair, they will offer some forgiveness when blending the hair cut.

on 12/20/2007 My husband wants me to start cutting his hair and with your steps I might just be able to do it. At least if I mess it up he does wear a hat, and his hair does grow fast. Thanks.
