How to Clean a Beach After an Oil Spill

Although rock and animal cleanup should be left to professionals, cleaning tar off a beach is something anyone can participate in. The activity can be dangerous, though, if proper precautions aren’t taken.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plastic bags, rubber bands
  • One kitty litter scoop with flat blade
  • Thin and well fitting gloves
  • Paper towels for equipment cleanup

Step1
Take 3 bags for each foot, and rubber band them over shoes.
Step2
Pick a clean area to stand, and clean a new foot area with your scooper and stick. Shake gently to remove excess sand. Stay above the waterline, and keep dry and clean.
Step3
The oil can be heavy, so double and triple bag.
Step4
Dispose of bags in dumpsters.
