Tooth decay is something no one ever wants to have; tooth decay causes pain, infections and is certainly not pleasing to the eye. Toddler teeth are extremely susceptible to decay because they are usually exposed to milk, juice, and various sweets on a daily basis. Parents can prevent toddler tooth decay by consistently caring for their toddler's teeth in the correct manner.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin taking your toddler to the dentist for check-ups early on. Many experts recommend taking your toddler to the dentist by the age of 1 year.

  2. Step 2

Clean teeth as soon as the appear. It is easiest to use a clean cloth to wipe the teeth and gums of a very young child, but you can also use a very soft toothbrush.

  3. Step 3

Brush or wipe teeth and gums at least twice a day, or preferably after all meals and snacks.

  4. Step 4

Don't allow a bottle at bedtime. If you feel you must provide a drink at bedtime make sure it is only water. Milk and juice will inevitably lead to toddler tooth decay.

  5. Step 5

Use fluoride. Most water systems contain fluoride, but if yours does not supplement with bottled water containing fluoride.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a toothpaste specially formulated for children. They come in fruity flavors and cartoon character packaging.
  • Never allow your toddler to brush his teeth unsupervised.
