A community-lead approach to weaning off of fossil fuels in preparation for when oil and natural gas reach their peak, transition towns are gaining popularity across Europe and beginning to sprout in North America. Starting a transition town takes great dedication and planning, as well as creativity.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Have a clear understanding of the context for transition town, the current global situation and the implications of climate change with peak oil and gas.
Step2
Set up an initiating group, a core group of individuals who will drive the effort and organize subgroups to address specific sectors of the community.
Step3
Network with existing groups and activists to gain their support in your endeavor.
Step4
Form contacts with other Transition Initiatives — examples include Lewes, England, Totnes, England and Kinsale, Ireland — and model ideas after their successes.
Step5
Teach participants skills necessary for a low-energy society, such as cooking, sewing, dyeing, practical food growing and gardening.
Step6
Outline an Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP), or local plan for dealing with peak oil. EDAPs should provide cumulative direction to local government and municipalities on maintaining a specific living standard in concern to health, education, waste, transportation, food and economy.
