The idea of using an exercise ball as a desk chair is to help with posture, along with working abdominals, gluteals and leg muscles.

      When picking out a ball, make sure thighs are slightly lower than knees. Recommended size for average size person (5'6" to 6'1") is a 65 centimeter in diameter.

      Do you mind having a ball that might roll away? If you don't mind chasing your ball every once in awhile, a regular exercise ball will work for a desk chair. If you want the ball to stay put there are balls that are attached to a ring with wheels on it. This allows you to still bounce and have proper posture, without the ball rolling away every time you stand up.

      Ease into it. Just because you got the exercise ball doesn't mean you'll be able to sit on it all day. Much like working out where you become sore the first couple days, start off using the exercise ball for an hour. After a couple days, slowing increase your time on it.

  • When picking out a ball height make sure to factor in the ball sinking when you sit on it.

  • Balls can also be used for crunches or as a bench for weight works out. This makes one engage the core muscles.

  • Do not use if have severe back problems.

  • When sitting down make sure ball is below you and has not rolled away.
