Holiday shopping can be a strain when you come from a large family. One way to ease the strain is to hold a White Elephant Christmas.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Random unwanted items from your home
  • Wrapping paper
  • Tape
  • Small bowl
  • Paper
  • Pen
  1. Step 1

Contact your family and let them know you will be having a White Elephant Christmas. If they are unsure what that is then use the following steps to explain.

  2. Step 2

Take an unwanted/unneeded item from your home and wrap it. Do not add a name to it.

  3. Step 3

At your family gatherin place all the gifts under the tree. Assign a number to each gift.

  4. Step 4

Take a sheet of paper and write down all the numbers of the gifts. Tear the numbers off, fold them and drop them in the bowl.

  5. Step 5

Have one person draw a number. They will be given the gift with that number.

  6. Step 6

Have each successive person do the same. However, if someone else who has gone before them has a gift they want they will be able to take that gift. The person whose gift was taken will then take the gift number that was drawn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make it fun. I've seen people give chocolate mugs and old underwear.
  • Be sentimental. If you have something a younger relative might want throw it in.
  • The gift grabber can get competitive, especially if you've wrapped an antique, original art or electronic equipment.
