Things You'll Need:
- Small scale figures
- Small scale sets or objects to use
- Video camera
- Script breakdown
- Notebook
- A couple of people to help
-
Step 1
Gather some small scale figures to use for your characters. Anything will work, from plastic army men to stuffed animals. Assign one for each character that has scenes you are story boarding.
-
Step 2
If you have set elements that are instrumental to the shoot, create these out of a cheap material like cardboard. If you have an important object or prop that needs to be represented, find something that can be used as a stand-in.
-
Step 3
Start with scene one and stage the scene with the important characters. Experiment with shooting them from different camera angles and keep a notebook of each different shot. It is helpful to have a couple people on hand to read the dialogue in your script for you, and assist with moving the figures or objects around.
-
Step 4
Follow the above steps for each scene. Once complete, you can go through your video story-board footage scene by scene and create a rough cut. While story boards are not a set in stone way to plan each shot of your movie, they can help you plan your shoot by eliminating certain camera angles and ultimately save you time and money.
