How to Buy a Birthday Gift for Your Boss or Co-Worker
Assuming you work for a company that allows it, buying a birthday gift for a boss or co-worker is a complicated social issue. The gift can send a message not only to the recipient but your other co-workers. Most etiquette experts say there are some things you should never do.

1
Keep the cost reasonable. Spending $10 to $15 for a birthday present for your boss or a co-worker is reasonable. Spending much more than that, especially on a gift for the boss, could convince your co-workers you have some other motives.
-
2
Buy something meaningful to the person based on what you know about her work habits or interests. If it's something for the office, avoid the obvious coffee cup or poster. If the person has a pet he is highly interested in, or a hobby she pursues, look for a gift that coincides with those thoughts.

Gift cards are a fall-back idea, but they don't show you've given the gift much thought. If you must choose a gift card, get it from a store or for a product the person enjoys. Avoid cards from discount outlets.
-
4
Keep the gift professional in nature. Avoid gag gifts since it is easy for people to take them the wrong way. Avoid any gift involving alcohol, and a man should never give a woman something that would figure to come from a significant other. Perfume, clothing and lotions are out of the question.
