Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tissue paper (various colors)
  • Streamers (various colors)
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

The first thing you must do is head off to your local dollar store. Purchase tissue paper in your favorite colors as well as color streamers and plenty of transparent tape. Also, purchase a good pair of scissors, if you need a new one. The colors for the wrapping papers and acessories in this article are dark green and lavendar (tissue papers) and bright yellow and purple (streamers).

  2. Step 2

The next thing you'll need to do is plan your design scheme. I decided to celebrate a traditional holiday in a not so traditional fashion. I opted for light lavender, yellow, green and purple as my colors of choice for a springtime theme. This twist adds some diversity to Christmas gift giving. However, you may choose any theme you wish. If you opt for a theme such as Victorian, then your colors will need to be pink, rose, burgundy, dark green, cream and gold, red and silver. In other words, keep your colors in coordination with the theme.

  3. Step 3

Taking a regular size box (8 1/2 x 11 inches), wrap the box using a pale lavender tissue paper.

  4. Step 4

Next you will want to use the colorful streamer paper and draw a tulip top. I choose tulips as they are fairly easy to draw even for a novice and look fine as a flat cut out (as this tulip will be) as opposed to two- or three-dimensional in design.

  5. Step 5

Procure some garden or design magazines so you can refer to something when drawing your flowers. These type of publications may be picked up at thrift stores or used book shops at nominal cost. Just do your best and draw what you see and do not worry about any lack of dimension. These drawings are suppose to be fun and the packages are suppose to be colorful--not artistic masterpieces. Choose bright yellow for one tulip top and deep purple for the other flower. If you have trouble with tulip tops you might try drawing and cutting out hearts.

  6. Step 6

Take some green tissue paper and cut out two delicate stems. Draw several leaves out of the same paper and cut them out.

  7. Step 7

Carefully tape the tulip top to your package. Use your scissors and cut a piece of trasnparent tape into thin sections. Adhere one side of the tape (adhesive side up) to the other side of the tape and place the rolled tape with adhesive side outward onto the back of the tulip top. Attach the tulip top(s) to the package. Repeat the same procedure for the stem and the leaves. When placing the two flowers on your package, it is suggested you tilt one flower slightly to the left and the other flower slightly to the right. Draw a flower pot from the streamer paper or tissue paper--your choice of color, and attach the flower pot to the bottom third of the stems. You may also create a sun using the yellow streamer paper.

  8. Step 8

Another idea is to once again wrap a package with the tissue paper. Tie the package with the streamer paper. Take a portion or strip of the streamer paper and wrap it around your finger several times making a three dimensional flower. Delicately pull the middle of the paper up somewhat, taping the flower so it does not come unraveled and attach it in the middle of your package. You may also wish to try this technique with remnants of material.

  9. Step 9

The idea in all of the above scenarios is to create a cute and interesting picture on top of your package. If you are fairly good at drawing, you may wish to create wisemen, camels and manger scenes using other colors.

  10. Step 10

Opt for depicting a snow scene, if you prefer not to go pastel, using silver tissue paper and drawing and cutting out white snow flakes. White bond paper may be used for the snow flakes.

  11. Step 11

Use your own imagination and come up with your own themes and colors. Your packages will look so pretty no one will want to unwrap them--well, almost.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider your theme before you head out for the store, particularly if you are on a budget. This type of wrapping idea offers a break from routine or provides something unexpected so put some heart and mind into your design scheme.
  • Draw something of which you are comfortable, particulary if you have little or no drawing skill. Even if you opt for something easy, the package is sure to delight the recipient.
