Things You'll Need:
- Plenty of ideas
- Patience
- The ability to budget both your time and money
-
Step 1
Set yourself up in a quiet, comfortable environment. There is nothing worse for a writer than background noise and distractions, so get rid of those right away.
-
Step 2
If you are writing material every day, you may find it difficult coming up with fresh ideas day in and day out. To help combat this, keep a notebook with you at all times. Write down whatever comes to mind--you never know when you can use something.
-
Step 3
Budget your time wisely. If you are staring at a blank screen for a long period of time, get up and take a walk or simply start on something else. Don't spend too much time on one project if you have another one waiting in the wings. Keep a daily planner.
-
Step 4
Reading e-mails and surfing the internet are great ways to waste all of your precious time. This is especially important if you work as a freelance writer because you need all the time you can get to make money. Designate certain parts of your day for doing these things.
-
Step 5
Build a portfolio of your best work and send it to prospective clients and employers. After all, you can't spend more time writing if you have no writing jobs in the first place. If you write for leisure, you never know when a strong writing portfolio might come in handy.
-
Step 6
When choosing writing gigs, look to see how much each one pays. Is it worth it to spend less time writing articles that pay you in peanuts? Aim for the higher-paying jobs that may take additional research and time because it will pay off in the end.
-
Step 7
Be sure not to sell yourself short on your abilities as a writer, either.
