Cocker Spaniels have the tendency to contract eye infections very easily, be it due allergies or the third eye-duct. Here are some steps to take care of them!

How to Take Care of Cocker Spaniel Eyes

  1. Step 1

When Cocker Spaniels are about one year old, they may develop a third eye duct. If this duct does not stay in the eye socket, it will “pop” out of the bottom corner eyelid. Surgery is often necessary to preserve the dog’s vision. Consult your veterinarian should this occur.

  2. Step 2

As Cocker Spaniels age, so do their eyes. There is a chance they can develop cataracts, and become blind late in their lives. (A Cocker Spaniel’s life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.)

  3. Step 3

If your Cocker Spaniel develops allergies, its eyes will get “boogies” and they need to be cleaned regularly (sometimes a few times a day). By cleaning them, you will help your dog enjoy better vision.

  4. Step 4

To clean its eyes, use a warm soft cloth. Gently, wipe from the corners of the eyes down and across. If your Cocker has had eye surgery, be careful not to press hard; this may cause the duct to “pop” back out! Be very gentle with the eyes to preserve your pet's vision as long as possible! Eye drops and medications are available for allergies from your veterinarian.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a soft paper towel, heavy tissue or a soft terrycloth towel.
  • Be very gentle on the lower eyelids.
