Sicilian Pizza is a favorite Italian dish. Here's how to make your own at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pizza dough
  • Pizza sauce (your favorite spaghetti sauce, no meat)
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Romano cheese
  • Sweet Italian sausage
  • 1/2 green pepper
  • 1/4 onion
  • Fresh clove garlic (2 to 4 medium cloves)
  • Olive oil
  • Mushrooms (if you like them)
  1. Step 1

Cook ground Italian sausage in a skillet and drain the grease. This will reduce the amount of grease on the pizza and in your arteries!

  2. Step 2

Sauté garlic, green pepper, onion and mushrooms with the Italian sausage. Add a little olive oil for flavor and carmelization of the garlic, pepper and onion blended with the sausage.

  3. Step 3

Pre-make your pizza dough. Roll your dough to the size of your pizza stone or pan. However, you will probably only use 1/2 to 3/4 of the dough, because you need to roll it very thin, about 1/8 inch thick. Once the dough is rolled out accordingly, place it on your stone or pan.

  4. Step 4

Place a few large spoonfuls of pizza sauce onto the dough first. Spread it evenly on the dough, leaving 1/4 inch around the edges clear.

  5. Step 5

Next, sprinkle the cheeses onto the pizza. You can pre-mix the two cheeses, or use an Italian blend cheese. Remember, this is a thin pizza, not too much cheese, or you won’t be able to pick it up! Just sprinkle to cover the sauce.

  6. Step 6

    Place the stone/pan in a pre-heated 350-degree oven for 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Take the pizza out. Spread the Italian sausage, pepper, onion and garlic mixture lightly over the top of the melted cheese.

  8. Step 8

Sprinkle a little more cheese on top of the sausage to seal in the flavors and place the pizza back in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Once the edges are brown and crispy, your masterpiece is complete!

Tips & Warnings
  • Sicilian pizza is thin and crispy, light on the toppings.
  • Try Olive Oil, Basil and Oregano on the dough instead of the tomato sauce for a unique flavor, especially if you are acid intolerant.
