If you have insurance you will need to get a prescription for a glucose monitor and the test strips. Take these and you will be getting a monitor for very little, if any, cost. You can do this as many times as you need to. Also, places like Liberty Medical can get you free supplies with the individual having Medicare. Check around and see what is available in your situation. Sometimes the health department in your city can point you in the right direction.

If you are one of the millions with diabetes that do not have health insurance, you will see that it is difficult to find supplies that you can afford at all. Strips are notoriously hard to get discounted or free, so I am focusing on monitors. There are plans like the rebate system where you can still get a prescription written and then send it in with a rebate form to get a free monitor. Google "free by rebate glucose monitor" for the list of current companies doing this. These are typically able to be done as frequently as those with insurance.

Some companies that make the monitors will ship them to you for free. Strips are where they make their money and many companies will give you a monitor so that you will buy their strips. Contour, Breeze, Ultra2 and Ultrasmart are a few of the monitors that you can get via links free on the web. Just Google your monitor and the word free and see what comes up.

Pharmacies such as Walgreens and CVS (and others, I'm just familiar with these two) will sometimes have coupons where you can get free monitors. Last month I stocked up on five free NovaMax monitors via a coupon that CVS had that made the monitors free. Just wait until this comes and stock up so that you don't need one and have to pay for a monitor.
