Make a Fleece Blanket

Struggling to find an inexpensive, yet thoughtful gift for the holidays? Try this easy, quick (& cheap) idea for a gift: a cozy fleece blanket

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 yards of fleece fabric [or two yards of (2) coordinating fabrics]
  • fabric scissors
  • masking tape
  1. Step 1

Lie first 2 yards of fleece face down on the floor or hard surface. Place second fleece fabric on top of first, facing up.

  2. Step 2

Measure two inches down on all four sides of the fabric. Lie masking tape two inches down from edges.

  3. Step 3

Every one inch, trim down to masking tape.

  4. Step 4

Starting on any side, tie matching strips from opposite sheets of fabric. Complete all four sides, and you have your completed fleece blanket.

  5. Step 5

    Want to add something more?
    - Try embroidering the persons name onto the blanket.
    - Are you not good with needles, Puff Paint works for personalizing as well (however, puff paint is not intended for longevity).
    - For added dimension, you could cut out an object on one of the top fabrics, revealing the fleece of the other side (caution, use only with solid print fleece fabrics).

Tips & Warnings
  • When tying together strips on your blanket, you can tie the corners two different ways:
  • For straighter lines, cut the strips on the corners to maintain a streamline weave pattern.
  • For a smoother approach, cut strips at corner point for two trapezoid shaped strips.
  • If using 4 yards of the same fabric, cut in half before completing step one.

on 11/12/2009 This sounds like a fantastic idea but I'm having a hard time following your directions. Step 3: do I cut away material or just give it a "slit"? Step 4: just tie the strips into knots? Are we trying to mate the two pieces of fabric together by knotting them? I guess I'm just not sure what its intended to look like as a finished piece. :-)
