Make sure you have a suction bulb, which is often supplied at the hospital. This device can not only suction fluid from a newborn's mouth, but can also suction mucus from a runny nose if a baby later gets a cold.

Purchase infant gas drops (Mylicon or Little Tummies are common brands) at the drugstore. These products contain the same active ingredient as the adult gas relief products, but in liquid form and dosed correctly for infants.

Purchase Infant Tylenol from the pain medicine section of the drugstore. Tylenol is a safe pain reliever and can also help bring down a fever.

Purchase a bottle of Pedialyte, which you can find at most drugstores. This electrolyte fluid is especially formulated for babies who are becoming dehydrated from excess vomiting.

Have a basic thermometer handy. It's best to take your baby's temperature under his or her arm. The ear-reading digital versions are not accurate in babies under six months.

Diaper cream is a must, since all babies get diaper rash from time to time.
