So, you're a do-it yourself kind of girl. You've just changed the oil in your own car- or maybe you replaced some tie-rods, and now there's grease stuck under your nails. Never fear! It's fast and easy to get them looking gorgeous again.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • White sugar
  • Dish soap
  • Nail brush or old toothbrush (don't use the one you use for your teeth!)
  • Your favorite hand lotion (optional)

Step1
Put a healthy squirt of dish soap in the palm of your (dry) hand. The strong detergent quality of dish soap makes it ideal for removing grease.
Step2
Add about 2 tablespoons of regular white sugar. This is abrasive and will scour your hands clean. It also dissolves easily in warm water and won't clog up your drain the way other abrasives, like pumice powder, can.
Step3
Mix sugar and soap into a paste. Scrub any particularly greasy areas on your hands. Scrape your fingernails across the palm of your hand to get some of the mixture under each nail. Then use the nail brush or toothbrush to give each nail a thorough scrubbing.
Step4
Rinse hands in warm water. If any greasy areas remain, repeat steps above.
Step5
(Optional) Rub your favorite lotion into your hands, paying particular attention to those hard-working nails and cuticles. Dish soap can be very drying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a little container of sugar by the sink for this purpose. You don't want to be sticking your greasy hands into the sugar you use to cook with!
  • Citrus-y dish soap smells nice and seems to have extra grease-removing capabilities.
  • This treatment can irritate dry, chapped hands, or any cuts. Use caution.
