You can't ignore a broken toilet. When the pot breaks down, something, even if only temporary, must be done to make it functional. One common malfunction is the breaking of the chain that connects the plunger inside the toilet to the valve. With this chain broken, the toilet will not flush. Rather than running out to the nearest hardware store to buy a new chain, there's a method to make a makeshift fix that's just about as good as the real deal. All it takes is a little fishing wire.

From Quick Guide: Unclog a Toilet
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toilet
  • Broken chain
  • Fishing wire
  1. Step 1

Lift the lid off the back part of the toilet.

  2. Step 2

Find the broken link in the chain.

  3. Step 3

Eyeball the distance between the broken link in the chain and rod that the chain links to.

  4. Step 4

Cut a piece of fishing wire slightly longer than this length.

  5. Step 5

Weave the fishing wire through the top-most link in the chain.

  6. Step 6

Tie the fishing wire around the rod that the chain is supposed to attached to. Make sure to go around several times to firmly secure the chain in place.

  7. Step 7

Put the lid back on the toilet and give it a flush. It should work just as if the chain never was broken in the first place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leaving too much slack with the wire will result in a weak flushes. Be sure to tightly keep the chain taught when rapping the fishing wire around the rod.
