Step1
Introduce yourself to your new co-worker. Go to your new co-worker's work area and greet him with a warm handshake. Show enthusiasm and tell that person who you are and what you do. Show enthusiasm and interest in what your new co-worker has to say.
Step2
Introduce your new co-worker to others. After you have chatted a bit, give your new co-worker time to get settled in his new work environment. Then give him a heads up that you will be introducing him to the other employees. You can do these in a few ways. Show the new co-worker around and introduce him as you walk around. Bring people to their work area and introduce them there. Call for a quick meeting to give a short introduction or just send an email to everyone that there is a new employee and tell others to welcome this new person by stopping by for a quick intro.
Step3
Show your new co-worker where things are. If your work place is in the office, you can show the office supply room, the fax and printer machines room. Show the new co-worker where the break room, restrooms, the mail room and the emergency exits are.
Step4
Help your new co-worker in getting settled in. During the first day, it is necessary that the new co-worker is settled in for him to be able to do his job. If you have an admin in the office, that person may be responsible in getting your new co-worker set up, so ensure that the two meet. If you do not have an admin, you may need to play the role in helping your new co-worker get set up. Ensure that he has the equipment and tools that he needs to be able to do his work. If he needs a computer, telephone and office supplies, ensure that he gets those and that they are properly set up. Make sure that your boss is aware that you are helping the new employee so that your boss knows where you are.
Step5
State rules. If your boss has not been able to do the orientation with your new co-worker, volunteer to do it yourself. Ensure that you are still doing your work at the same time still able to accommodate the needs of the new co-worker. There may be some ground rules and standard operating procedures that need to be followed in your workplace, ensure that you let your new co-worker aware. If there are policies about when and how long to take breaks, taking personal phone calls or entertaining visitors, be sure to let him know.
Step6
Give your new co-worker breathing room. Your new co-worker may find that things are going too fast, so try to give them some breathing room. Give him enough time to himself to get his things ready and be able to get some privacy or quiet moment to himself.
Step7
Be available. Let your new co-worker know that if he needs help you will be available. Let him know the easiest way to get hold of you or where you work area is so he can stop by for questions.
Step8
Show your new co-worker how to do things. It may be necessary during the first few days to show your new co-worker how to use the office equipment. Offer your help and be patient when your new co-worker asks for help.
Step9
Take your new co-worker out. At the end of the first day, you may want to have an after work get-together with other co-workers. Invite your new co-worker to join to make him feel comfortable and to get acquainted with everyone.
Step10
Follow up. The next day, follow up with your new co-worker on how things are going. You'll be glad to see that he is back for the second day partly because he feels welcome and he finds that the work environment you presented to him the day before suits him well.
