French Onion Soup Can Be Quick and Easy
French Onion Soup Can Be Quick and Easy

Today's busy lifestyles mean that we often have less time to cook from scratch. Luckily, there are a myriad of excellent products on the market today that can serve as a cooking base. Such is the case with my favorite recipe for French onion soup. It can be made in less than 30 minutes or less.

From Quick Guide: Easy Soup Recipes
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Several cans of condensed French onion soup
  • One small to medium sized yellow onion
  • Butter or margerine
  • 1 Tbsp. of parsley flakes
  • 2 tsps. of chives
  • 1 Package of hamburger buns
  • Garlic salt
  • Mozarella cheese
  • Parmesan cheese (grated)
  1. Step 1

If you don't have the ingredients readily on hand, go to the grocery store to obtain them.

  2. Step 2

Cut one small to medium sized onion into pieces no bigger than one inch in length.

  3. Step 3

Caramelize the onions in butter or margerine until they are soft. This can either be done in the microwave or in a pan on the stove.

  4. Step 4

Using one can of condensed French onion soup for each person you intend to serve, place the appropriate amount into a saucepan. Reduce the water requirement listed on the can by two-thirds to one-half, depending upon how rich you want the soup base to be.

  5. Step 5

Add the extra caramelized onions to the soup and mix thoroughly.

  6. Step 6

Add one tablespoon of parsley flakes and one teaspoon of chives to the soup mixture. Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer while you prepare the bread topping.

  7. Step 7

Use one-half hamburger bun for each person. Butter each bun and sprinkle lightly with garlic salt and grated parmesan cheese.

  8. Step 8

Toast the buns in the oven until they are hard to the touch. They should be extremely golden brown in color.

  9. Step 9

Pour the soup mixture into individual bowls.

  10. Step 10

Put one toasted hamburger bun on the top of each soup bowl. Sprinkle liberally with mozarella cheese.

  11. Step 11

Place each bowl in the microwave or oven long enough to melt the cheese throughly over the top of the bun and soup mixture. It should be slightly golden brown in color.

  12. Step 12

Garnish the top of each bowl with a sprig of parsley.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use fresh parsley, chives, and parmesan cheese if at all possible.
  • Use grated or sliced mozarella, whichever you prefer.
  • You can substitute plain or flavored salad croutons for hamburger buns.
  • Be careful not to burn the soup mixture.
  • Be certain that the buns are well toasted, otherwise they will get soggy inside the soup.
