Instructions

  1. Email

    • 1

Log into your email client and compose a message. Minimize its size if possible to 160 characters since some cellphones have this standard limit on the size of a message they can receive as a text.

    • 2

Determine the wireless carrier of the phone you are sending the message to by asking the person receiving it or using FoneFinder.com.

    • 3

Learn the proper protocol designated by the wireless provider to use in the "To:" field of your email. Look for a FAQ section on their website, or use the following parameters:

      Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com

      AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net

      Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com

      CellularOne: phonenumber@mobile.celloneusa.com

      T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net

      Nextel: phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com

      Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com

      Alltel: phonenumber@message.alltel.com

    • 4

Create a subject for your email, such as "Message from ____________"

    • 5

Attach photos, videos, MP3 files or attachments to your email. Keep this at a minimum, however, to ensure that your message isn't rejected for its size.

    • 6

Click Send, and later verify your message was received.

    Website Message

    • 7

Choose a website TXT service, such as Text2Day or SMS Everywhere, that specializes in sending free SMS messsages. Set-up regular text messages to individuals or groups through a paid service like TXTSignal.com.

    • 8

Enter the area code and phone number of the recipient.

    • 9

Select the cellphone provider of the person you are sending your message to. Use FoneFInder.net to learn who the cellphone provider is of someone you are blindly emailing.

    • 10

Compose your text message in the allotted space. Note any restrictions on the size of the message you are sending, such as a 160-character limit.

    • 11

Read and agree with any terms of service, and click send.

Tips & Warnings

  • Identify yourself to the recipient of your text to avoid being seen as an anonymous spammer.

Those short numbers that do not correspond to a physical phone are called "short codes". You need to send the text to a 'short code' from a mobile phone. To my knowledge, you cannot send to a short code via email.

My problem is that I don't have all the info needed here. I wanted to take part in a fox news pole, but all the info they give is "send a text message to FNCTV". It lookes like thats supposed to be enough info, but so far every site that sends text messages want a 10 digit phone number and a carrier. I never use text messaging, and don't have a cell phone, so I just am not familiar with the technology. Can someone steer me right?
