Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guest list and invitations
  • Birthday cake
  • Black balloons and over-the-hill party decor
  • Party favors
  • Adult party games
  • Food of choice
  • Refreshments
  1. Step 1

    Up to 2 months in advance, compile a guest list of who you will be inviting to the party. Remind them it is a surprise.

  2. Step 2

    Set up the party space with over-the-hill party decor, black balloons and tablecloths.

  3. Step 3

    Have guests hide until the birthday recipient walks in.

  4. Step 4

    Serve light refreshments and birthday cake.

  5. Step 5

    Open presents and play games.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have guests park their vehicles elsewhere and walk to the party location to prevent a spoiler.
  • Confetti, silly string and other crazy party favors are good for 40th birthday parties.
  • Order pizza or serve light foods to spare extra work on the hostess.

on 2/14/2008 I threw a surprise birthday party for myself. The invitations read "For me, by me, don't tell me." Everyone jumped out and yelled surprise after I let them all in and left the room.
