How to Help a Child Learn to Love to Read

It is vitally important that our children learn to read well and enjoy books. If all there information comes from TV it shortens their attention span to 10 minute intervals and their focus becomes gimmie, take me, buy me from all the commericals. Many young people today do not understand the value of being able to absorb a story or spell a word correctly. There is a school in my neighborhood which has signs in the front with messages for the neighborhood. One message recently proclaimed, "Be accounable for your actions". The sign was misspelled for 7 days before someone changed it. This is a fine state of affairs. We must help our children to read and spell since the schools are not able to handle the job of hiring those who can do so.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • books
  • patience
  • time
  • caring
  • interest
  • a library card

Step1
Mother and Child sharing a precious story and learning to exercise their minds. Go to the library and get your children a card as soon as they are old enough to have one. Start reading to them when they are infants. Even if they don't understand the words they will appreciate the rhythm and comfort of being close to you and getting attention. When they start to understand they will be enthralled with the tales. You can buy used books at garage sales for a few cents and build up a library at home.
Step2
Boy enjoying a good story with his nose in a book. Discuss the story with the child after you finish. Ask them to tell you what happened in the story and how they felt about what they heard. Practice the alphabet. When they are old enough have them sound out words to you. Show them spelling patterns such as at, bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat and so on.
Step3
Girl in love with a story book. When they start to read to themselves ask what they are reading have them act out the story. Show interest and be enthusiastic. If you are not fascinated why would they be. Shut off the TV and have everyone sit together and read to themselves. Make is cozy and comfortable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Creating a calm environment is conducive to reading.
  • Explain to the children that everything they want to learn about can be found in a book and that they can make up and write stories and plays.
  • Explain that spelling is important because if people cannot tell what you are writing they may misunderstand your meaning. Show high standards.
  • This could be habit forming. Good luck!
