How to Write a Sports Article

Step1
Watch a sports game and take notes that you will be able to access after the game. There is no set format to taking notes just make sure to format them in such a way that you will be able to read them and understand them later.
Step2
Once the game is over, look over the statistics of the game and try to get an idea of the general theme of what exactly transpired on the playing field.
Step3
Once you have determined what the theme or top news-making incident from the sporting event, write out specific sentences about exactly what happened. (Be sure to be direct without giving too much wording. It's important to remember that sports articles are generally read for enjoyment, not for a sense of purpose such as news articles.)
Step4
Once you have written out your story of what happened in the game, try to put together an attention-grabbing "lead" to put at the top of the story. If your sportts article is for a local paper about a little league championship game, a good example of an appropriate lead would read, "John Doe's bat and his glove made sure that the Dragons wouldn't leave North Park without a championship Saturday afternoon."
