Colds and flus are at their worst during the winter months - and especially during the holidays when family and friends gather to celebrate. Don't let this holiday season make you sick!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tissues
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Flu Vaccine
  • Gel or alcohol wipes

Step1
The most effective way to prevent the onset of flu is a flu vaccine. Children and parents should get a flu vaccine yearly from either your physician or your local health department.
Step2
Wash hands often. Children can be taught to thoroughly wash hands by singing "The Birthday Song" twice or one stanza of "Old McDonald". If soap and water is not available, use gel or alcohol wipes.
Step3
Keep your hands away from your face. Try to teach children to avoid constantly touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
Step4
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Keep plenty of tissues on hand for children to use. If tissues are not available, teach children to cough or sneeze into their shirt at their elbow - not into their bare hands.
Step5
Stay away from others who are sick. Avoid exposing your children to colds and flu by not visiting friends and relatives who have it.
Step6
Don't let children attend school or social functions if they are experiencing symptoms of flu.
Step7
Disinfect surfaces often - doorknobs, tabletops, toys, etc.

Tips & Warnings

  • Good hygiene practices can help you avoid colds and flu.
  • Fluenza viruses can survive on inanimate surfaces for 2-6 hours.
