With food prices rising, buying in bulk is not only cheaper, but takes away the worry of how much an item will cost the next time it is needed. Non-perishable foods, both organic and mainstream, can be purchased online from a variety of vendors. The key is knowing how much an item is locally and being able to compute the cost online plus shipping.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Calculator
  • Internet Access
  • Credit or Debit Card for Purchases
  1. Step 1

Make a list of the non-perishable items you purchase regularly. This can include items like sugar, flour, oatmeal, and seasonings. Write down beside each item the amount and last price you paid. Use the calculator to figure out pound or ounce price.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you wish to purchase organic or if that matters to you.

  3. Step 3

Connect to the Internet and pull up your browser. In your favorite search engine, type the item you are looking for along with the word bulk. Specify organic also if that is what you prefer.

  4. Step 4

Investigate the prices listed at each vendor on the first page of search results. Again, break the prices down to pounds or ounces. See what each company charges for shipping.

  5. Step 5

Use the vendors search engine to see if any of the other products on your list are offered. Many companies offer terrific deals on shipping if the order equals a certain amount.

  6. Step 6

Make your vendor choices by choosing those that will give you the most value for your dollar. If storage space is not a problem, order as much as your wallet can handle. The more you order, generally, the cheaper the item gets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most bulk purchases do not have to be repackaged until they are opened. Keep plenty of freezer bags, plastic tubs or canisters on hand.
  • Plan on reordering bulk food items about 1 month before you run out of the item. That way, if an item is out of stock, it will have time to be re-ordered and on its way to you – before you run out.
