1. Do you have friends or family with great wedding albums? Try taking a look at them and if you like what you see, you may be able to hire that same photographer.
2. Create a list of photographers you’d like to interview. Find them in ads, referrals, from stylists you admire, and even from the Yellow Pages. Make appointments to meet with them.
3. First, evaluate this individual’s personality. Do the two of you click? Does he or she listen to you? Remember, you’ll have to work with this person throughout your entire wedding day. Make sure you two have a good rapport.
4. Examine the photographer’s book. Do you like the style? Do you have a specific style in mind such as black and white, formal, fun, classical, or romantic, and does this photographer match your tastes?
5. Ask about costs and make sure you are perfectly clear on any and all charges so there are no surprises. Discuss how many rolls will be shot, how many prints are included, and inquire about package and reprint costs. Ask if he or she expects money up front and how much, and whether or not there’s a cancellation fee.
6. Ask the photographer what will happen in the case of his illness or unforeseen emergency. Is there a back-up plan?
