How to Relieve the Burning of Pepper Spray

How to Relieve the Burning of Pepper Spraythumbnail
Accidents happen -- here's what to do.

Pepper spray is a chemical compound made from capsaicin oil, which irritates the eyes and skin. Capsaicin is the same ingredient that makes chili peppers taste so hot. If you are unfortunate enough to experience being sprayed, don't panic. Get someone to help you rinse off, if possible. You can take certain measures to relieve the burning, but only time will make it go away completely.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Hose or kitchen sprayer
    • Ice packs
    • Clean towels
    • Non-oil-based soap
      • 1

Leave the location where the pepper spray was sprayed, being careful not to touch anything, especially your eyes or your face.

      • 2

Blink vigorously--the more you blink, the more natural tears you will bring to your eyes, helping to dilute the capsaicin oil.

      • 3

Remove contact lenses if you are wearing them.

      • 4

Get to the closest hose or kitchen sprayer. Flush your face and eyes with cool water. Do not rub your eyes.

      • 5

Use a non-oil-based soap and cool water to remove the residual spray from your skin. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with clean towels -- again, do not rub.

      • 6

Remove and immediately wash your clothes. Be sure to thoroughly clean and soak your contact lenses before replacing them.

      • 7

Use ice packs as needed to soothe affected areas and decrease inflammation.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Do not rub your eyes, your face or your hands on anything before they are decontaminated.
