A truly ancient art, calligraphy has steadily been gaining in popularity as materials get more sophisticated and easier to use. Gilding is the process of applying a gold or other metallic finish to a calligraphic design, and it could be just the special touch you've been looking for to complete your latest calligraphy project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Prepared gum ammoniac or PVA
  • Gouache
  • Small pointed paint brush
  • Gold leaf
  • Soft long-haired Chinese brush
  • Agate or hematite burnisher
  1. Step 1

Assemble all your materials before you begin. This saves time, headaches and allows you to concentrate fully on the task at hand.

  2. Step 2

Make a very light pencil outline of the letter or design that is to be gilded.

  3. Step 3

Mix the prepared gum ammoniac or PVA with a very small amount of the gouache.

  4. Step 4

Paint the outline and then fill in the area that you wish to gild. The slight tint that the gouache provides the gum ammoniac or PVC will help you be sure that you have covered the area completely.

  5. Step 5

Allow the design to dry completely. This could take up to an hour depending on your working conditions.

  6. Step 6

Cut out a piece of gold leaf that will completely cover your design.

  7. Step 7

Breathe on the design to create a tacky surface to attach the gold.

  8. Step 8

Press the gold down firmly with the fleshy part of your thumb, gently tracing the area of the design.

  9. Step 9

Apply a second layer of gold if necessary.

  10. Step 10

Brush away the excess gold leaf with the Chinese brush.

  11. Step 11

Burnish the design with the burnisher to complete the bond and buff up the metallic shine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Powdered gold can be used for gilding as well, but it will never have the same brilliance as gold leaf.
  • Sweep up and store the excess gold leaf in a small container. Even the tiniest scrap can be used for something else.
  • Be very gentle with gold foil. Not only is it fine, clingy and difficult to work with, it is also very expensive so you will not want any of it to go to waste.
