I'm a lottery player and I wanted to do some simple statistics to help me choose my numbers. The logical thing for me was to build a spreadsheet. I play a 5 number lottery in my state. Every day when I check the drawing, I enter that days drawing into my spreadsheet. I have five columns of numbers. After a while, the list of numbers gets pretty large and I wanted to find out which number appeared the most in each column. I use Open Office Calc, but it's very similar, if not exactly the same as Excel. I chose a cell where I wanted my data to appear (one for each column). Hi-lite that cell where you want the data to appear. Next, select the function wizard. A dialog box will appear. Under the "Category" drop-down list, select "statistical". Directly under the category drop-down list is a list of functions. Scroll down the function list and select "Mode". At the bottom of the dialog box, click on "Next". In the "number 1" field, you'll see the cursor blinking. Excel or Open Office Calc is waiting for you to define a range of numbers, so hi-lite every number in the first column making sure that you select all the way down to the final cell in the column. There are 365 days in a year, so you'll want to select all 365 cells so your function will update as you enter new numbers. After you've selected the cells that you want to analyze, click "OK" at the bottom of the dialog box. And there you go. You should now have the one number that appears the most frequently in that first column. You can do four more and have the five numbers that appear the most frequently (by column). Do the same thing, only this time select all five columns all the way down to the 365th cell and it will return the one number that appears most in all five columns or as I call it, the HOT number. And there you have it.
