Buying a computer today can be an exciting and challenging event, but it can also become a major stress point in your life. Technology changes every day and what you have installed in your computer today can seem antiquated within months, so you need to be wise in what you buy.

How to Shop for a Computer

1. On a sheet of paper, list all the functions you wish your computer to have.
2. Ask a friend or family member that has knowledge of computers to help you.
3. Find at least three computer stores that are trustworthy, where the staff is there to help you, not just to sell to you.
4. Go to the first store and tell the salesman your requirements.
5. Get that store rep to compile a stat sheet for you listing all those requirements and a range of prices for computers that fulfill them.
6. Repeat Step 5 at other computer stores.
7. Have a friend review all your estimates and help you decide which unit is best for you.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure that your computer is expandable, meaning that it has the capacity to add other pieces of hardware such as additional RAM and an expanded or external hard drive.
• Don't let a salesman talk you into spending more then you want for functions you don't need.
