How to Stop Dizziness

The sensation of spinning and dizziness is one that most people have experienced at least once in their life. There are many causes of dizziness either by a viral or bacterial infection affecting the inner or outer ear or through some illness, inflammation, injury, foreign body in the ear and medications. Vertigo, for example, is the sensation of the surrounding environment spinning around the person. Certain conditions can cause dizziness, for example, orthostatic hypotension where upon standing rapidly from a sitting position the blood pressure drops temporarily causing the symptom.

Step1
One way to stop dizziness especially one caused by orthostatic hypotension is to get up slowly and hold on to the wall or to surrounding solid objects.
Step2
Dehydration can also cause a person to experience dizziness therefore may sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout he day to prevent this from happening. The elder population tend to neglect drinking enough water during the day are more susceptible to getting dizzy
Step3
Hypoglycemia and certain medical conditions can also be accompanied by dizziness. Ensure you have adequate food intake for energy throughout the day and don't fast for long periods of time. Carry some candy or pieces of fruits to snake on whenever you feel an episode about to happen.

Salt can also induce headaches in some people. It not necessary to take in extra salt into the diet. Make sure you read and check labels for products and food items before purchasing to ensure you know the amount of salt or preservatives were added to the product.
Step5
Some medications can induce dizziness in some people. If you are taking multiple medications make sure you speak to your doctor so he or she can explain to you the side effects of the medications and also ask to make sure there are no adverse drug interactions .Certain medications like aspirin, high blood pressure tablets, and antidepressant can cause dizziness. Speak to your doctor about changing he medications so you can eliminate this affect.

Flus and colds can also cause dizziness in some people. The virus or bacteria can affect the inner ear causing a condition called vestibular neuritis which causes inflammation and injury to the inner ear making it difficult to balance and walk.
Step7
Flexing the legs or contracting in the calf muscles can help the blood from pooling in the calves since this pooling effect will cause orthostatic hypotension.
Step8
Exercising to keep the circulation pumping at its optimum and delivering vital oxygen to the muscles and body will reduce the chance of getting fainting or dizzy spells.

on 12/28/2007 Great article. I have had a positional vertigo a couple of times. My doctor recommended Antivert which does stop the symptoms, but drinking water is the best prevention and cure.
