With so many outside influences, it is extremely important to make your kids feel comfortable enough to tell you anything. You need to create a nurturing bond with them because it's extremely hard to be a teenager these days.
Start as early as possible in communicating your own values and beliefs to them. This doesn't mean that you need to preach to them or even give them lectures. Simply talking on a daily basis with them about things and issues that present themselves will let them know how you feel about certain subjects.
Step2
Talk openly with them about issues they face. These kids have to deal with many things that you probably never even dreamed of when you were their age, such as school shootings, terrorism and other alarming events. It is important for them to know that you understand that life is tough as a teenager, that you are on their side and they always have you to talk to about issues.
Step3
Give your opinions and answer their questions. You will make your kids comfortable asking you anything if you give them honest answers and don't make them feel stupid for asking. If they ask you what a condom is, answer them as best as you can, depending on the child's age. However, if you reply that "It's nothing for you to worry about," chances are that they won't ask you again. They will find out, though, by asking someone else.
Step4
Make sure that they know that you understand what they are going through, because you have undoubtedly been through similar situations while growing up. You can gain a close bond with them if you can relate to something that is happening with them and tell them about your experiences. Even small things, like how you felt when you got your driver's license, could make them more comfortable in telling you their fears.
Step5
Let them know that you will never judge them. Tell them about things you may have done or mistakes that you have made.
Tips & Warnings
Tell your childre at an early age that you will trust them until they give you a reason not to trust them.
