How to Clean Out the Playroom

It's that time of year, you can hear Santa's sleigh bells ringing, the birthday party gifts are pouring in or family is coming for a long overdue visit. You know what comes next-a deluge of fabulous new toys. If you've already got a full playroom, read on to figure out how to make room for the newcomers.

Step1

Think about your child's age and ask if she has outgrown some of her toys and clothes. Gather up the toys that are in good condition but no longer appropriate and give them to a local charity organization.

Look in the baskets and bins and consider the last time your child played with the toys therein. If it's been a while, move the toy(s) out of sight for a week. If your child doesn't miss it, it's time for it to go to a local charity organization.

Step3

Get rid of things that are broken or incomplete. Unless you see your child playing with it regularly, those toys can go right to the trash or recycle bin.

Step4

Weed through the books. It might be time for the board books to go to your child's cousin and the torn and ripped books to the recycle bin. If you're overloaded with books, give the less popular ones to the local library or his preschool to make room for what's coming in.

Step5

Check for recalls. Now is a great time to evaluate your toys for safety. If you've had a toy for a while, go online and search for information about it. You may find that it should be out of your playroom or exchanged for a safer model.

Step6

Think about vertical space. Your children are likely taller now than they were when you first set up the playroom. Think about adding shelves so that their toys and books can be visible to their new height.
