How to Bake Old Fashioned Butter Cookies

When planning for the holidays or when you simply need a tasty homemade treat, consider baking butter cookies. You can follow the separate recipe for frosting to add a touch of delicious to decorating the fresh cookies or pour a bit of sprinkles on the cut cookie dough before you place the sheet in the oven. No matter what shapes you cut them in or how you choose to decorate them, if you follow this recipe you are bound to be snacking on some delicious homemade treats.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Refrigerator
  • Plastic cookie sheet and plastic wrap
  • Cookie cutters
  • Rolling pin
  • Oven
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup Land O Lakes Sweet Cream Butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 Cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. of baking powder
  • 2 tbsp. orange juice
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 qt. mixer bowl
  • Greased cookie sheet for use in oven
  1. Step 1

    Add butter, egg and sugar in mixer bowl.

  2. Step 2

    Mix until fluffy, then add the flower, baking powder, orange juice and vanilla.

  3. Step 3

    Mix until well combined and smooth.

  4. Step 4

    Separate the dough into two separate parts in two pieces of plastic wrap.

  5. Step 5

    Close the saran warp and place dough in the fridge for 2 to 3 hours or until firm enough to be rolled.

    Give it some time to thaw and preheat the oven at 400 degrees once dough is firm,

    Flour the surface of a plastic cookie/surface sheet then place a handful of dough on this surface.

  8. Step 8

    Roll out the dough to 1/8" to 1/4" in thickness. Then use your cookie cutters to cut out the cookie shapes.

  9. Step 9

    Place shapes on greased cookie sheet. Once the sheet is full and the oven is done preheating, place the cookies in the oven and set the timer for 6 to 10 minutes.

  10. Step 10

    Check cookies at about 6 minutes, then again a few minutes later. Take cookies out to cool when edges are golden brown.

  11. Step 11

    Continue this process until all dough is gone.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a softer cookie, roll the dough to 1/2" thick.
  • You can also pre-decorate your cookies by adding sprinkles to cookies before placing them in the oven.
