How to Prepare to Spend Christmas Away from Home

Spending Christmas away from home takes a little more preparation and planning than a normal vacation. Here are some tips to get you ready.

   Keep your pet happy during the holidays even if you're away.

   Have a pet? Make plans to board them or have a friend look after them well in advance. Many people travel during this time so space may be limited.

   Water your tree well.

   Remember that if you have a live Christmas tree you will definitely want to have it well-watered before you leave. You may even want a friend to stop by and water it while you are away. Unplug any electrical items, around the tree- especially Christmas lights.

3. You may not want to wrap gifts if you plan to bring them and you are flying. Security regulations require any wrapped gifts to be opened if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are flying with gifts, buy small items that are easy to pack.
• Turn your heat down to save on energy bills while you area away, but keep it set high enough to prevent pipes from freezing if there is a cold snap.
• Have a neighbor collect your mail and any packages that may be delivered to your home.
