An old dessert recipe, but well-worth trying.

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 eggs, separated
  • 1 stick butter
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
  • 1 cup pecans or other nuts
  • 1 small can Baker's coconut
  • 1 box confectioner's sugar
  • 1 stick soft butter
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1 can coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
  1. Step 1

    Mix baking soda with buttermilk and set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Beat the egg whites until stiff and set aside.

  3. Step 3

    Cream butter, shortening and sugar.

  4. Step 4

    Add egg yolks and beat well.

  5. Step 5

    Alternate mixing the flour with the buttermilk.

  6. Step 6

    Add flavoring and fold in pecans, coconuts and egg whites.

  7. Step 7

    Bake at 350 degrees until light brown.

  8. Step 8

    For the frosting, mix the confectioner's sugar, one stick of butter, cream cheese, pecans, coconut, vanilla and butter flavoring and spread over still-hot cake.
