Preschool children love to recognize words as they develop their reading skills. This activity will encourage them to practice reading those words and boost their self-esteem, as well.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pen or markers
  1. Step 1

Encourage your child to point out to you words that she recognizes. You may choose to do this at the store or in the car or even back at the house. Make a list of all the words she points out.

  2. Step 2

Regardless of whether these words are ones that she recognizes as sight words (such as McDonald's or Cheerios) or ones that she sounds out (such as stop or bank), add the words to her list.

  3. Step 3

Write each word on a piece of paper and glue it to a "word wall" collage that hangs prominently in the home.

  4. Step 4

Reinforce the progress by occasionally asking her to read the words on her word wall. As the list grows, she will feel a great sense of accomplishment and be encouraged to add to her wall.
