Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Paul opens Chapter 12 of Romans with this statement, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.” The Romans were very familiar with the idea of sacrificing for they sacrificed many things to idols. Their sacrifices normally were not living on the altar. They sacrificed to please the gods they worshipped. Now Paul was asking them as Christians to offer themselves to God as a living sacrifice, to place themselves on the altar, so to speak, to please God.
Step2
One of the sacrifices Paul is talking about to please God is to be loving. The people who serve God must have authentic love for his is people. If love is not authentic, it has no value.
Step3
Also in verse 9, it states for the person to hate what is evil and to cling to what is good. One of the evil things happening as the time was the worship of idols. This was to be hated by the Christians, for God hates it when his people worship anyone or anything other than him. God is good, and he wants his people to cling to him.
Step4
The unity of the body is very important to God. How often do people get caught up in what they want, and not care what others want? This causes division in the body. Verse 10 says that we are to be devoted to one another in brotherly (sisterly) love. This is a sacrifice we are to make.
Step5
Always be excited about God and what he is doing. Verses 11 and 12 of Romans 12 show that we are to be steadfast in our commitment to the Lord. We are to be serving joyfully, being hopeful, being patient and being faithful in prayer. This is a sacrifice to make.
Step6
God is concerned with all people, especially his people. Romans 12:13 says that if someone is lacking something, we are to help them out. God works through his people who are obedient. Could you be the tool used by God to help someone out? This is a sacrifice.
