Christmas stockings are a tradition in many households. Often parents fill them with little presents or candy for their children to find on Christmas morning. Sewing a stocking at home is a way to make the tradition even more special. This article explains how to make a velvet Christmas stocking at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ½ yard of velvet fabric
  • 1 yard of ribbon
  • Sewing needle
  • Matching spool of thread
  1. Step 1

Cut your fabric. Trace the outline of another stocking or print out a template off the Internet like the one found at the link below. You will need a top, a bottom and a cuff. Make sure to cut them so that the velvet side is on the outside of the stocking.

  2. Step 2

Pin the pieces together, with the velvet sides facing the inside. Leave the top of the stocking open.

  3. Step 3

Using your needle and thread, sew along the outside edge of the stocking. Remove pins.

  4. Step 4

Stitch the short sides together for the cuff. Then slip the cuff over the stocking boot. Sew the top edge of the cuff and the stocking together.

  5. Step 5

Turn the stocking right side out. Stitch around the final edge of the cuff. Fold the cuff down and make sure the seams are hidden.

  6. Step 6
Use any embellishment to decorate the cuff.

Use any embellishment to decorate the cuff.

Decorate the cuff. Pin decorative ribbon into position along the bottom seam of the cuff. Stitch it into place.

  7. Step 7

Use a five inch long piece of ribbon to sew a loop so the stocking can be easily hung. Simply fold the ribbon in half and sew it in place inside the stocking on the top of the heel side.

Tips & Warnings
  • When cutting the fabric, give yourself about 1/4 inch extra along the outside of the template.
  • Reinforce the hanging loop to make sure the ribbon doesn’t break when holding gifts.
