Cruising can be cheap or expensive, depending on your tastes and budgets. Make sure to get the best value on your next vacation.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Cheap Cruises
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask about sales and discounts when you book your cruise. Many travel agents and cruise agents will let you know if there's a big special coming up. Also, many cruise lines offer deals for military personnel, firefighters and police officials.

  2. Step 2

Keep an eye on your cruise after you book. If the price goes down, many cruise lines will refund the difference or give you an on-board credit.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you understand what is included in your cruise price. Generally a cruise includes your room, port charges, most food and some activities. Things like golf lessons, spa services or yoga classes might cost extra. Some ships have specialty restaurants that charge extra. Alcoholic drinks are not included!

  4. Step 4

Understand the tipping process. Most cruise lines automatically add a tip to your bill that is about $10 per person per day. You can elect to lower this tip, but you will be asked why. You should also know that an automatic gratuity is added to any alcoholic drink.

  5. Step 5

Book your excursions through a private company to save money.

  6. Step 6

Limit the time you spend in the casino.

  7. Step 7

Take advantage of the ship's free entertainment, which includes shows, tea time, games and contests. Check your ship's daily schedule.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many experts suggest buying trip insurance in case poor weather or other complications affect your plans.
  • Shopping is a major activity for many cruisers. Don't be tempted if you can't afford it.
  • You'll be given a plastic card that acts as your room key, ID and credit card aboard the ship. You must pay for the purchases at the end of your trip. Check your account balance on your cabin's TV each night to make sure you stay on budget.
  • Dispute any charges to your account that you did not make.
  • Book the cruise many months in advance and gradually pay off the trip before you go.
  • You will need a passport to go on many cruises. Make sure you consider the cost in your vacation plans.
  • Check for recommendations with reputable companies before booking excursions. Your ship will not wait for you if you are late. If you are worried, paying the higher price for excursions through the cruise line might be a better choice.
  • Read your cruise line's cancellation policy carefully.
