Even though Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States, with thousands of veterinarians within the nearly 500-square foot metropolis, it's hard to be a responsible pet owner when the cost to spay or neuter a pet can easily be above $100. Fortunately, there are other safe options to sterilize your furry friend. Here you can find out the most cost-effective ways to safeguard your pet's health without breaking the bank.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Start at the Los Angeles Animal Services website, where you can read information about the low-cost programs available, specifically The Big Fix (see Resources below).
Step2
Locate the Animal Care center that services your zip code. These centers are listed at the Los Angeles Animal Services website.
Step3
Call the Animal Care center that services your zip code to set up an appointment. They may want to know the approximate age and weight of your pet.
Step4
Take your pet to the Animal Care center in a pet carrier appropriate for his size. After the surgery, be sure to ask your veterinarian for post-operative care instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Los Angeles is also an excellent resource of information about spaying and neutering your pet (see Resources below).
  • Ask about the qualifications of the veterinarian in charge of your pet's surgery. Make sure they are state-licensed veterinary technicians. Although you want a low-cost surgery for your pet, your pet's health is more important.
