This fabric heart placemat is good craft project for Valentine's Day. Use some beautiful vintage red fabric to create your heart shaped placemats. They will last for years and look great on your dinner table.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Creating the Heart Shape

  1. Step 1

Cut out a sheet of paper to 12-by-18 inches.

  2. Step 2

Fold the paper in half, making it 12 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Trace half of a heart on the fold.

  3. Step 3

Cut the heart out and discard the scraps.

  4. Creating the Valentine's Placemat

  5. Step 1

Wash and dry the fabric before you start the project. This will allow for shrinking.

  6. Step 2

Trace the heart pattern onto your fabric and interfacing. Trace the shape with a pencil or piece of chalk.

  7. Step 3

Cut out the 2 hearts. One will be from the fabric and one will be from the fusible interfacing.

  8. Step 4

Iron the fusible interfacing to the back of the heart shaped fabric. Place the shiny side of the interfacing against the back of the fabric. Slowly iron the 2 together on a medium high heat. Let the fabric cool.

  9. Step 5

Check to make sure the interfacing is firmly attached to the fabric. If it is loose at all you need to iron until they are firmly together.

  10. Step 6

Sew around the heart shaped fabric with your sewing machine. You want to sew this line about 1 inch in from the edge of the fabric. You can use any stitch pattern and thread color you like.

  11. Step 7

Trim the edge of the heart with your pinking shears. This will create a fun pattern on the edge of the fabric.

  12. Step 8

Apply a no fray product to the edge of the fabric. This will prevent the edges you cut with the pinking sheers from fraying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fusible interfacing will make your placemat as stiff as you want. Go for a medium weight for a slightly sturdy placemat. A craft weight or heavy weight interfacing will create a thick and firm placemat.
  • Have fun embellishing the heart placemats with buttons, beads, and fabric paint once you have sewn it together.
  • Spot clean the fabric when necessary. You can wash it and lay it flat to dry. Iron the whole placemat after each washing.
  • Use a spray on fabric protecting to help prevent any staining.
  • Starch the fabric to help create a super stiff surface as well.
