Fake Enthusiasm for a Gift
Fake Enthusiasm for a Gift

In an age of conspicuous consumption when we tend to buy what we want when we want it, the art of gift-giving has turned into a hit or miss affair. While etiquette allows a recipient to return an unwanted gift, some situations call for fake enthusiasm and a swayed appreciation. Sometimes, it is the effort that counts—-from both the giver and receiver.

From Quick Guide: Deal with Unwanted Gifts
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open your eyes wide and make eye contact with the gift giver.

  2. Step 2

Offer an exclamation: “This is great!”; “I’ve been eyeing one of these!”

  3. Step 3

Turn the item over in your hands and examine all parts with feigned interest.

  4. Step 4

Suggest how you plan to use the item: “I’ll bring this with me on my camping trip”; “This will be great for a girls’ night out!”

  5. Step 5

Thank the gift giver for his or her thoughtfulness.

  6. Step 6

Repackage it in its original wrapping with care for re-gifting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Letting the giver know how you plan to use the item will give a sense of your interests, which might lead to a more appropriate gift in the future.
  • Acting too excited about a less-than-stellar gift might seem like an act. Turn on the charm but keep it at an appropriate level.
